Left of Center, Off of the Grid
Renewable and alternative energy, alternative healing, xeriscaping (going native with your landscaping).
Alternative energy is not limited to electricity production, our cars are one of our biggest consumers of petroleum. We have purchased a gas/electric hybrid vehicle (Toyota Highlander), not based on the fuel savings but to send a message with our money to car manufacturers that we want fuel effecient, lower emission cars. Another option is to buy a deisel car and use biodeisel fuel; I am excited to note that biodeisel is for sale in Logan. There are units for sale now to make your own biodeisel also, though I have no personal experience to share on that development.
Xeriscaping...I have begun putting native plants in my flower borders with the goal of reducing how much watering is required, giving birds and wild animals a variety of plants they have utilized for years, and reducing the invasion of weeds.
Alternative healing covers a lot of territory I realize and hot springing is considered one by many folks, but I want to share some info about a few folks I know who do other stuff.
Massage is available nearby and is something I would like to add to our menu here at the springs in the future, as soon as I have a quiet and comfortable space for it. For now I will let you know some folks who do massage. Lee Kelsey does massage for women in Logan 435-760-3188.
Susanne Hull in Preston 208-852-2865 I believe does massage for all folks.
Energy Therapies CranioSacral, SomatoEmotional, Zero Balancing, Reiki are done by Cari Hudson only 10 minutes away 208-427-6214.
Accupuncture Billy Arlt, L.Ac. 208-852-9339 at 12 and1/2 N State St in Preston.
Reflexology, herbal remedies, vegetarian lifestyle and "Idiot's guide" books to all three written by a friend of mine Frankie Avalon Wolfe, MH, PhD. http://www.healingfeats.com
OFF THE GRID- Renewable electricity
Maple Grove Hot Springs is completely off the grid. We make our own electricity from microhydro, solar and wind generators; As a last resort we have a backup propane generator. I would like to encourage everyone to look into adding some renewable electricity production to your home, it's not as hard as you might think! Solar is certainly the easiest of ours and the only chore involved is brushing the snow off the panels. Systems come in all sizes and can be truly "idiot proof". There are utility tie ins, if your home is on the grid so you can reduce your purchase of electricity from the grid. If you are building a new place where lines have not been before you can be completely independent ("off the grid"). We are glad to share knowledge and information we have gained and there are a variety of websites and experts on renewable and off grid living, here are a few I know of...
Let me know if you have a site I should add here...Contact Us
We use a cellular phone as well but it requires some help to get a signal. We have a digital booster which increases the wattage for your phone, a directional antenae also called a "yagi" and a dock-n-talk which allows you to plug in a regular phone into the cell phone so you can walk around and keep the cell phone away from your grey matter.
