Oneida Narrows Reservoir
Maple Grove Hot Springs fronts Oneida Narrows Reservoir on the Bear River. This reservoir is used for electricty production not irrigation, therefore it still has water to play in at the end of the summer. This reservoir is popular for boating, waterskiing and fishing - walleye, bass and other warm water fish. The photo below shows Dustin Mallet age 9 who caught this 23 inch walleye with his sister Hailey and friend Jessica right from our bank.
Below the the dam, 3 miles South, you can tube a lazy river for a very fun hot weather family activity; We have 10 tubes for rent here at the springs. Trout fishing is very good in the lower 6 miles of the narrows downstream of the dam.
Oneida Narrows reservoir is great for Birdwatching #14 on the map for the birdwatching tour of the region.
Personal water craft (ski doo/jet ski type) are available for rent in Logan at...
Cache Honda Yamaha 435-563-6291 http://www.cachehy.com or Renegade Sports 435-755-7111, these same places rent snow machines in winter.
The Trailhead specializes in canoes and kayaks 435-753-1541. They rent kayaks, rock climbing shoes and sell all the rock climbing gear. There is a bit of rock climbing available here in the Narrows but if you want a climbing adventure try a trip to Logan Canyon, a beautiful drive past Bear Lake or through the city of Logan to 400 North Road (left).
Biking
Some of the hardy individuals that train for LoToJa (Logan to Jackson) and such rides have actually biked up here from Logan (via the summer route to Maple Grove Rd on Hwy 36) and camped the night then either met a car or ridden bikes back to Logan. Now the rest of us can do something a little mellower. Leave one car here and drive back up into the Cache National Forest and bike down to the springs form there, then shuttle back to the other car after a soak. Oneida Narrows Rd is also a pretty quiet ride along the river to the dam (or farther) to bike.
Cache National Forest
Only 2.5 miles East and North of the hot springs this area offers fun activities all year. Cache National Forest goes from Strawberry to Emigration(12 miles) contact Montpelier Ranger District for more details 208-847-0375, 322 No 4th St Montpelier, Id 83254. The Highline Trail takes off from Emigration Campground, it is a 55 mile National RecreationTrail where folks can hike, ride horses, mountain bikes, ATVs or motorbikes. There is a 6 mile stretch which is too narrow for ATVs from Paris Canyon to Danish but is still useable by bikes, motor or manual. Snow mobiling is also allowed on the Highline Trail in the winter, Snow machines can be rented in Logan or Bear Lake. The short road to this area from the hot springs is not open in the winter but can be used by skiiers, snowshoers or snowmobilers. http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/caribou-targhee/recreation/ Unfortunately the Forest Service website will not tell you about Highline trail in Idaho but the friendly Rangers in Montpelier can. There is an ATV rental in West Valley City (Salt Lake metropolitan) who can set you up with all the necessary gear for ATV play 801-631-5526.
How about a soak and a show? The Performing Arts Center is located on Main Street in Grace Idaho about 19 miles from the hot springs.
Niter Ice Cave bring warm clothes and multiple light sources to explore this "historically used refridgerator". The ice cave is just off highway 34 and is a neat visit for a break from Summer heat! 11.3 miles from the hot springs.
Black Canyon 2 miles West of Grace. If you are an expert kayaker you might want to take on this challenge, for the rest of us it's a beautiful scenic spot with some good fishing.
Minnetonka Caves, Bear Lake, Oregon Trail Visitors Center Minnetonka Caves are only open in the summer Memorial day to Labor day but well worth a trip! Minnetonka is about 10 miles off Hwy 89, the tour runs about 1 1/2 hours, bring a jacket the cave gets to 40 degrees by tours end, also you must be in physical condition to traverse a ton of stairs! Bear Lake and Oregon Trail Visitor Center have year-round activities.
Scenic Byways - Oregon Trail Hwy 34 is part of the scenic byway system of Idaho.
Skiing
Cross Country skiing can be done right from the Hot Springs. There is a 2 mile unplowed road (hill to Hwy 36 comes out a half mile from Cache National Forest) or a fairly flat 3 miles of unplowed road along the river to the South of the springs. One added benefit here in winter is that we are not in Cache Valley's fog inversion.
